Yeah and no. Paddle Boarding has definitely grown in popularity over the last couple of years but it’s been far longer than that. Paddle boards are modified surf boards that are essentially long. They can be laid on and paddled in a surf boarder’s manner but they are made to stand on. You then use a long paddle with a bend in it to deliver a more powerful thrust. You have to keep your eyes on the horizon instead of looking down and paddling like the gondoliers in Venice would do to use the paddle boards successfully. It is a great cardiovascular exercise and there are a lot of athletes who use it for purposes of cross training. If you are looking for more tips, check out Paddle board rentals Bonney lake.
It began back with the Hawaiian Island Kings. Specifically for this purpose they used the boards and in 1926 Tom Blake restored surf boards from that era to be put into a museum. By drilling holes into it, he modified an OLO surfboard to lighten it and cover it with material to be standing on. Three years later, Blake captured the first ever surfing title, Mainland. He broke virtually every record with the same board for paddling a board, and held many until 1956. Thus the birth of the first paddle board. Although the boards have continued to evolve, manufacturers of paddle boards and retailers sell boards that still use some of the original design principles of Blake.
The board remained a subset of surfing in the eyes of many until resurgence in the 1980s, even with Blake’s notoriety. Norm Shifren won a Watermans Race consisting of a race of 22 mile from Point Dume to Malibu. That win caught a surf journalist’s attention under the name Craig Lockwood. Lockwood In honor of the race, the Waterman began production of a professional quality paddle board called. Boards with that design have won more races than any other, and to this day are still a popular type. Soon after that manufacturers in L.A. started to turn out 300 to 400 paddle boards, which is half the total sales in the United States per year. Many new races dedicated to Paddle Sports have started to spring up across the country and the popularity is continuing to grow.
